Train crash injures 16 people

SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 (UPI) -- Sixteen people were hurt when two San Francisco Municipal Railway trains crashed into each other, officials said.

The incident took place Saturday when a one-car T-Third train ran into the rear of a two-car N-Judah train that was halted at a traffic light, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"We don't know why it happened. The safety of our riders is our top priority. We'll do everything to investigate this incident as quickly as possible and determine the cause," said Judson True, a spokesman for San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Twelve people received hospital treatment for non-life threatening injuries, police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said.

The rail lines involved were reopened within hours of the crash, officials said.
