TBILISI, Georgia, June 15 (UPI) -- Officials in Georgia and its rebel breakaway province, South Ossetia, exchanged allegations Sunday of shelling attacks in the region.
South Ossetian Interior Minister Mikhail Mindzayev said the province's capital, Tskhinvali, was hit by shells Saturday night that injured two interior officers and two other people, RIA Novosti reported.
Mindzayev said attackers in the Georgian villages of Ergneti and Nikozi fired mortars and large weapons in the incident.
Joint peacekeeping forces also said South Ossetia and Georgia opened fire on one another Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Mamuka Kurashvili, leader of Georgian forces in the region, alleged South Ossetia opened fire on the Georgian villages of Mamisaantubani, Tsargvi and Ergneti back on Jan.14, though no injuries were reported.
