Search on for 12 miners in Ukrainian mine

YENAKIYEVO , Ukraine, June 10 (UPI) -- Rescuers searched Tuesday for 12 miners missing days after a coal mine in eastern Ukraine was rocked by an explosion, mine safety officials said.

Workers Tuesday removedt the body of one miner who was killed in the blast and another 24 miners were rescued, reported RAI Novosti, the official Russian news agency.

"The rescue operation is continuing," a local mine safety spokesman said.

The methane blast occurred Sunday about 3,280 feet underground at the Karl Marx mine in Yenakiyevo in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, when 37 miners were working in the mine, RAI Novosti said.

Work at the mine was suspended a few days prior to the explosion after safety regulation violations were discovered . The miners were performing maintenance work when the blast occurred, RAI Novosti reported.
