JOLIET, Ill., June 10 (UPI) -- Police in Joliet, Ill., say they have arrested a woman who allegedly sold her 18-month-old son for $100 in a sting operation.

The Joliet Herald News Tuesday reported Jovon Griggs, 28, was arrested after a transaction in which a man described as a concerned citizen paid her for the toddler using money provided by police.

"We were contacted and told Griggs had attempting to sell the boy Monday morning," said Deputy Chief Patrick Kerr. "Our investigators became involved and contacted the Department of Children and Family Services."

Police didn't say why Griggs allegedly put the boy up for sale, but said officers had been sent to her home about a month ago to check on the welfare of her children.

Griggs was charged with a misdemeanor and released on bond. The child and his 8-year-old brother were placed in protective custody.
