Obama makes gains on McCain in Gallup Poll

PRINCETON, N.J., June 9 (UPI) -- A poll showed U.S. voters are trending toward presumptive Democratic Party presidential nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

The Gallup Daily Poll released Sunday indicated that Sen. Obama was favored by 46 percent of respondents compared with 44 percent for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the presumptive Republican nominee. The data indicate the most positive position Obama has had against McCain since mid-May, pollsters said.

The daily tracking survey, in which 4,379 U.S. adults were interviewed June 3-7, has 2 percentage-point margin of error. Its authors said the results appeared to show Obama has picked up the support of some backers of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., who dropped out of the race the last day the poll was taken.

Lydia Saad of polling firm based Princeton, N.J., said that since mid-May, Obama has either trailed McCain or has led him by 1 percentage point, adding that when the results of polling conducted Sunday are tabulated, they could show Obama holding a clearer lead over McCain.
