Pakistan asks U.N. to probe Bhutto killing

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 7 (UPI) -- The government of Pakistan has asked the United Nations to investigate the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

U.N. Ambassador Munir Akram made a formal request Friday during a meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Dawn TV reported.

Bhutto, who narrowly escaped death soon after her return to Pakistan, died in December in an attack that used both a bomb and guns. The Pakistan People's Party, her political group, has been calling for a U.N. investigation since the assassination.

President Pervez Musharraf asked the London Metropolitan Police, Britain's famed Scotland Yard, to assist in the investigation. But the PPP says British investigators were blocked from delving into the people behind the killing.
