Osborne supports Spelman in nanny scandal

LONDON, June 7 (UPI) -- Caroline Spelman, the head of Britain's Conservative Party, likely did nothing wrong by using public funds for a nanny, Shadow Chancellor George Osborne says.

Osborne said Saturday that while the member of the British Parliament has come under fire for allegedly using her own parliamentary expenses to pay her nanny, she likely did not intentionally violate any laws or regulations, The Times of London said.

"I know Caroline personally and she is literally the last person in Parliament who would want to do something wrong," Osborne said.

A party spokesman has attempted to clarify the growing scandal, saying Spelman used taxpayer funds to pay Tina Haines for her additional role as a "constituency secretary."

"When first elected as an MP Caroline Spelman employed Tina Haines as constituency secretary," the unidentified party representative said. "Tina was paid from her parliamentary allowance for the work she carried out providing secretarial support in the constituency."

The Independent said Spelman had been scheduled to investigate alleged misuse of party funds by European Parliament Member Giles Chichester this weekend.
