INDIANAPOLIS, June 7 (UPI) -- Rivers across the Midwest surged Saturday as heavy rains brought flash floods to the region.

Two interstate highways in Indiana, I-70 and I-65, were closed because of flooding, the Indianapolis Star reported. A state trooper said I-70 appeared to have been washed out in one flooded area.

In Indianapolis, authorities used city buses and boats to get residents of one neighborhood out of harm's way.

In Iowa City, the Iowa River rose. City officials warned residents to prepare for flooding at least as bad as in 1993, the Cedar Rapids Gazette said.

In Vigo County, in southwestern Indiana, West Terre Haute was almost cut off by flood water, WTWO-TV reported.

The National Weather Service said rivers in southern Indiana might crest at levels not seen since 1913 -- and could break records.
