SEATTLE, June 5 (UPI) -- A man with a history of mental illness faces a probable second trial in the slaying of a Seattle woman and the wounding of five others.
A judge in Seattle declared a mistrial in the case of Naveed Haq, 32, after the jury, which had deliberated for eight days, reported it was hopelessly deadlocked on 14 of the 15 charges against him.
Throughout the trial, Haq's attorneys never disputed that the Tri-Cities man barged into the Belltown offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle on July 28, 2006, killing Pamela Waechter, 58, and wounding five others, the Seattle Times said.
Haq, of Pakistani heritage, reportedly railed against Jews and U.S. policy on Israel when he opened fire.
The six-man, six-woman King County jury told Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas it could agree only that Haq was not guilty of attempted first-degree murder for wounding Carol Goldman, the first to be shot before she could dial 911, but could not decide whether that act was attempted second-degree murder.
