RABAT, Morocco, June 4 (UPI) -- Security sources in Morocco say an explosion at a weapons workshop has killed the leader of al-Qaida in Morocco.

The body of the unnamed chief was found in the town of Beni Drar near the Mediterranean Sea, Med Basin Newsline reported Wednesday.

Security sources say the commander of al-Qaida's operational network in the North African kingdom had rented a workshop in the town to assemble explosives and detonators for shipment to Algeria.

A premature explosion occurred around May 27, Med Basin Newsline reported.

Al-Qaida in Morocco is believed to have been involved in the April 2007 suicide attack on the government center in Algiers.
