Oxford names Yale official as next head

OXFORD, England, June 3 (UPI) -- Britain's oldest university has drafted its next vice-chancellor from the Ivy League in the United States, Oxford officials announced Tuesday.

Andrew Hamilton is currently serving as provost of Yale University in New Haven, Conn. While he was born in England and holds dual citizenship, he has spent much of his adult life in the United States, The Financial Times reported.

As vice-chancellor, Hamilton will be the university's de facto head of administration, since the chancellor is a figurehead. He is scheduled to succeed John Hood in October 2009.

Hood, a New Zealand businessman before he became vice-chancellor, has been a controversial figure because of his attempt to make the university more powerful. Critics said that Hood did not understand the relationship between the university and its colleges and pushed for a successor from inside Oxford, the report said.

Those who oppose Hamilton's appointment can bring it up at the next meeting of the Oxford Congregation, an assembly of university staff.
