Jurors deadlocked in Haq trial

SEATTLE, June 3 (UPI) -- Seattle jurors are deadlocked on all but one portion of criminal charges against alleged killer Naveed Haq.

King County Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas ordered the jury to continue deliberations on the man who is accused of having broken into the offices of the Jewish Federation and having shot six women, killing one. But the continued deadlock since deliberations began May 23 raises the possibility of a mistrial, reported the Seattle Times Tuesday.

The 12-member jury sent a note saying it had unanimously agreed on one portion of one of the 15 criminal charges. But they appeared to be in disagreement on the status of Haq's sanity at the time of the shootings.

Kallas said under case law trial judges "tread a narrow and dangerous course" when deciding how much time is enough for deliberations. If the jury sends another note stating they are unable to continue, she would then consider questioning them, she told the Times.
