ORLANDO, Fla., June 2 (UPI) -- A number of media outlets are speculating Republican Sen. John McCain will select Florida Gov. Charlie Crist as his running mate.
Crist was one of three possible vice presidential candidates invited to McCain's Arizona ranch recently and his endorsement of McCain last January may have helped the senator win the GOP presidential nomination, The Orlando Sentinel reported Monday.
The newspaper says the 51-year-old Crist has crossover appeal and would bring youth and one of the nation's biggest swing states to the McCain camp.
On the flipside, Fortune magazine and the Christian Broadcast Network say Crist may be too moderate to satisfy conservatives and one news analyst points out that two years as governor of Florida doesn't add up to a wealth of experience.
As for history, the Sentinel says no U.S. vice president has ever come from Florida.
