Fallen crane declared safe only days ago

NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- The construction crane that crashed to the ground in New York Friday had been declared safe only days before the fatal accident, records indicate.

The New York Post said Saturday that city records show inspectors were present on May 22 and May 27 when the crane was heightened, or "jumped," but found nothing amiss. The crane collapsed into an adjacent apartment building Friday, killing two construction workers and severely injuring a third.

The crane collapse has resulted in a suspension of all crane operations in the city over the weekend as investigators to try to determine what caused the latest incident. On March 15, seven people were killed in New York when another construction crane collapsed.

The Post said the construction site on the city's Upper East Side had been the target of 22 complaints since work started there last July, and that six of the complaints involved the crane that fell. The most recent complaint was filed Thursday, the day before the collapse, when someone told officials it was being used to dangerously hoist loads over workers' heads.
