BAGHDAD, May 28 (UPI) -- U.S. and Iraqi forces have captured dozens of suspects and found caches of weapons in recent days, officials said.
Iraqi authorities discovered a munitions cache Wednesday in southeastern Baghdad, American Forces Press Service reported.
Among other things, the Iraqi national police seized bombs designed to pierce armored, rocket-propelled-grenade launchers, sniper rifles, grenades and a rocket sled.
"Taking these weapons off the streets of Baghdad is a tremendous step in safeguarding the people of Baghdad," said Army Lt. Col. Steve Stover, a spokesman for Multinational Division Baghdad and 4th Infantry Division.
"The national police continue to demonstrate their professionalism in keeping the local populace safe and secure."
Troops in Mosul Tuesday detained four suspected terrorists believed to be associated with al-Qaida, while 41 others were detained in Salahuddin province.
Authorities also confiscated about 700 rounds of machine-gun ammunition there, the news service reported.
