
JARRATT, Va., May 27 (UPI) -- Virginia carried out its first execution in nearly two years Tuesday, putting to death a man who murdered a convenience store owner, a TV station reported.
Kevin Green, 31, whose lawyers contended was mentally disabled, was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m. after he was given a lethal injection at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Va., WJLA-TV in Arlington, Va., reported.
The death row inmate's execution was delayed about an hour while his attorneys unsuccessfully sought to convince a federal judge to stop it, WJLA-TV reported.
Green had been convicted in the August 1998 slaying of Patricia Vaughan, who operated the convenience store with her husband. He allegedly took about $9,000 in the robbery, the TV station said.
