QUITO, Ecuador, May 27 (UPI) -- Ecuador has captured a known member of Colombia's second-largest leftist rebel group, Ecuadorian police officials said.

Police said they captured Antonio Wellington Claro Arevalo at a bus station in Quito before he could board a bus bound for Peru, El Comercio reported Tuesday.

Authorities corrected previous accounts of the arrest in which Claro Arevalo, a member of the National Liberation Army, or ELN, was characterized as a leader of the group.

Colombian forces have been battling leftist rebel groups like the ELN for more than 40 years.

In March, Colombian special forces entered Ecuadorian territory and killed a leader the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the country's largest rebel group.
