California fire coming under control

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 27 (UPI) -- The Summit Fire, which has burned 4,270 acres and 36 Santa Cruz Mountain homes in California was coming under containment, officials said.

About 85 percent of the fire was listed as contained with no further spreading overnight, Cal Fire spokesman Chris Morgan told the San Jose Mercury News Tuesday, saying they hoped for full containment soon.

Fire officials were re-evaluating the possibility of lifting closures at several main highways, including Summit Road and Loma Prieta Road. Evacuations for other areas affected by the fire were lifted during the Memorial Day weekend.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation. But costs fighting it had reached $10.6 million, with seven firefighters injured. A total of 2,632 firefighters had been assigned to the blaze, although Morgan said that number "will start going down drastically pretty quickly," the Mercury News reported.
