LAGOS, Nigeria, May 26 (UPI) -- Militants in the Niger Delta said they killed 11 soldiers during an attack on an oil pipeline, but security officials haven't confirmed any deaths.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said in an e-mail to journalists it carried out the operation in Rivers State, the BBC said. The militants said they blew up a flow station and fell back when soldiers arrived.
The organization -- which wants a greater share of oil revenues for the Niger Delta area -- has conducted a crusade of sabotage on oil facilities and infrastructure since 2006, the British broadcaster said. Oil production has dropped by about 25 percent.
While the organization's leaders say they are seeking a bigger share of the oil wealth, others said the pipeline attacks are conducted by criminal gangs for extortion.
