BAYAMON, May 25 (UPI) -- U.S. Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama traveled to Puerto Rico Saturday to try to sway voters as Puerto Rican primary nears.

Obama spoke highly of Puerto Rico's military efforts while visiting the University of Puerto Rico in Bayamon Saturday morning, CNN reported.

"It's fitting to be here today, not just because Memorial Day is around the corner but because Puerto Ricans are such an important part of the United States military," he said.

The Illinois senator criticized Republican Sen. John McCain's stance on not changing the GI Bill to offer full scholarships to universities for soldiers.

"I don't understand why John McCain would side with George Bush and oppose our plan to make college more affordable for our veterans," he said.

Clinton led a "Solutions for Puerto Rico's Families" gathering in Aguadilla Saturday.

She promised it would be a "personal priority" in her first term to find a solution to issues concerning statehood for Puerto Rico.
