BEIJING, May 24 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev vowed Saturday to strengthen his country's ties with China despite opposition to that alliance from others.

Medvedev's comments came while visiting students at Beijing University, and stressed that Sino-Russian cooperation must continue and evolve even "whether people like it or not," RIA Novosti reported.

"Perhaps such strategic cooperation between our countries does not please everyone, but we understand that interaction is in the interests of our nations, and we will strengthen it in all possible ways, whether people like it or not," the Russian news agency quoted Medvedev saying.

Earlier in the trip, the Russian president signed a statement with Chinese President Hu Jintao criticizing U.S. efforts to establish an anti-missile defense presence in Europe and elsewhere, saying it threatened global balance and would weaken "confidence-building measures between countries and the consolidation of regional stability," RAI Novosti reported.
