High gas prices affect holiday plans

SAN FRANCISCO, May 24 (UPI) -- Record-high gas prices are affecting U.S. holiday habits, even in car crazy California.

A survey by AAA of Northern California found that the number of Californians planning to drive at least 50 miles for Memorial Day was down 0.1 percent, The San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday. While the decline might seem insignificant, it is the first drop since Memorial Day 2002, Cynthia Harris, a spokesman for the organization, said.

The San Francisco band Lipstick Conspiracy is cutting back on its summer touring schedule.

"Gas used to be something you thought about a little," said Sarafina Maraschino, a member of the group. "But we've crossed that point where you have to re-evaluate. When we toured before, you never really had to think about gas."

Harris said that it is not just gas prices, topping $4 per gallon. Air fares, hotel room rates and car rental are all up.

The survey found that the number of Californians planning to fly somewhere for the Memorial Day weekend is down 0.2 percent. Those going by boat, bus or train also declined.

"People are still traveling, but they're sticking closer to home or staying with relatives and friends to save money," Harris said.
