LONG BEACH, Calif., May 24 (UPI) -- A California congresswoman was explaining herself Saturday after disclosures she has defaulted on three property mortgages, losing one to foreclosure.

The Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram reported its investigation showed Rep. Laura Richardson, D-Calif., has financial troubles with houses she owned in San Pedro and Long Beach, Calif., in addition to a previously reported foreclosure auction on a Sacramento home.

Richardson blamed the Sacramento situation on a "miscommunication" with her lender and told the newspaper she had no regrets for failing to pay $9,000 in property taxes or missing house payments.

"I should have moved forward in an earlier fashion. I acknowledge that. I intend never to conduct business in that fashion again," she told the newspaper.

The Press-Telegraph reported Richardson purchased the Sacramento home in January 2007 for $535,000, and that it was sold at auction May 7 to an investor for $388,000. The lender, Washington Mutual Bank, took a loss of nearly $200,000 on the transaction. The newspaper also found Richardson had faced foreclosure on two other homes she owned.

Richardson said the financial problems resulted from her multiple job changes and noted many families in today's economy are facing home foreclosures.
