SOFIA, Bulgaria, May 23 (UPI) -- The Bulgarian government lost some motivation to reform after a tense year getting ready to join the European Union, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said.
"The government and parliament worked without any summer or winter holidays the year before our accession, because it was very important to prove to ourselves as a nation that Bulgaria, when mobilized, can achieve goals," said Stanishev.
Stanishev, 42, has been pressured to act against corruption amid signs the European Commission is putting heat on his government, The Times of London reported Friday.
In the past eight years, there have been 150 suspected organized crime killings in Bulgaria with no convictions, the Times said.
"Somehow there was a kind of relaxation mentality: 'We did everything well, we can relax', and this is a very substantial part of the problem now," the prime minister said.
