BAGHDAD, May 23 (UPI) -- A roadside bomb near Falluja killed an Iraqi interpreter and wounded six U.S. Marines Friday, military officials said.

Falluja police chief Col. Faisal Ismail Hussein said four of his officers were hurt Friday when a vehicle they were bringing into their compound to be defused exploded, the Los Angeles Times reported. U.S. officials said one police officer died in the incident.

The military also announced that a U.S. soldier was killed Thursday by a bombing southwest of Baghdad.

In Basra, followers of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr claimed Iraqi police caused one death when they fired into the air at Sadrists assembling for Friday prayers. A hospital reported that two people injured in the shooting were treated there but said no bodies had been brought in.

In Hawija, in northern Iraq, police said one person was killed and three injured in a bombing.
