COCHABAMBA, Bolivia, May 22 (UPI) -- Three Norwegian women face criminal charges after they were arrested in Bolivia for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine over the border, officials said.

Authorities stopped the women, ages 17 to 22, at the airport in Cochabamba, Bolivia, after drug-sniffing dogs were drawn to their bags, Aftenposten reported Thursday. It is reported the 2-year-old daughter of one of the women was with them.

Officials said they discovered more than $4 million worth of cocaine in the womens' luggage.

The suspects told authorities they knew nothing about the drugs and said they may have been planted by an unknown person.

Norwegian embassy officials said they are attempting to make sure the toddler and women are taken care of while in police custody at a women's prison.

Norwegian authorities are trying to have the toddler transported to Norway.

The women have been assigned two attorneys while their case is investigated, Aftenposten said.
