BOSTON, May 21 (UPI) -- A federal magistrate in Boston has ordered the release on bond of reputed New England Mafia boss Carmen "the Cheese Man" DiNunzio.
DiNunzio, who weighs more than 400 pounds and suffers from diabetes, is being allowed to return home after posting $20,000 cash bail, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.
The 50-year-old reputed Mafia underboss has been jailed since May 2 after being indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.
DiNunzio and two associates are accused of paying a $10,000 bribe to an undercover FBI agent posing as a Massachusetts highway inspector in order to secure a $6 million Big Dig contract.
In ordering his release Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith G. Dein said the crime DiNunzio is charged with does not involve violence or threats of violence.
She set a number of restrictions on his release including that he must continue to live in East Boston and cannot work at his Endicott Street cheese shop.
