NEW YORK, May 21 (UPI) -- Funding problems plague efforts to turn the aircraft carrier Intrepid into the main attraction of a sea, air and space museum in New York.

With five months remaining before Intrepid is set to arrive at its new pier in Manhattan, the group in charge of the project is seeking millions of dollars in additional funding, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum has been pleading for public and private money to complete renovations on time.

Last year museum directors borrowed against the project's $15 million endowment in order to keep it going when the cost of overhauling the carrier and rebuilding its pier turned out to be double the original estimate.

White is pressing trustees of the foundation and other supporters to put in $10 million more. He is lobbying for a similar amount from New York's city council.

The official opening of the museum is set for Nov. 11, Veterans Day.
