DENVER, May 19 (UPI) -- Children watched as a Denver man was gunned down by police after a neighborhood disturbance was reported, witnesses said.
Police responded to calls Saturday that there was an incident and that a man had wounded himself. However, when they got to the address, they could not find him, The Denver Post reported.
About 30 minutes later, the man showed up carrying an unidentified weapon, police spokeswoman Detective Sharon Hahn said.
Police opened fire on him after "verbal orders and less lethal attempts" to make him give up his weapon did not work, Hahn said.
Several neighbors said the slaying was observed by several youths, some of whom may have been members of the dead man's family.
Authorities Saturday were investigating who resides in the home where the incident took place and how they are linked to the slain man, the Post said.
