Rezko case could shape governor's race

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 18 (UPI) -- Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's decision to seek re-election could hinge on the outcome of the trial of his fundraiser, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, observers say.

Rezko, a Democratic stalwart, is accused of using his political clout to help state contractors in exchange for bribes and political contributions, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday. A verdict in his case is expected within days.

Although Blagojevich hasn't been charged in the case, there has been testimony linking him to Rezko and speculation about what the developer might tell prosecutors if faced with a prison sentence.

"The issue is ... whether Rezko will have anything to say about the governor. That will obviously weigh on any decisions the governor will make" about seeking re-election, said state Sen. James Clayborne, D-Belleville.

Senate Minority Leader Frank Watson, R-Greenville, said Blagojevich doesn't appear to be worried.

"He has a Teflon coating about him," Watson said of the governor.

If Blagojevich decides to run for a third term, he almost certainly would face a challenge from his own party, observers say.

Democrats state Comptroller Dan Hynes, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn have been at odds with Blagojevich and are often mentioned as possible challengers.
