PONTIAC, Mich., May 17 (UPI) -- Some Michigan high school students say they feel untrusted after intense safety rules were put in place in response to the assault of a teacher.

Northern and Pontiac Central high school students have been subjected to an open-ended lockdown, consisting of several strict regulations introduced after science and robotics teacher Mark Taylor, 53, was attacked and beaten by two students March 18, The Detroit News reported.

Taylor received hospital treatment for his injuries and had yet to return to his classroom, the newspaper said.

"I'm a good student and it makes me feel like I'm not trusted to do what I want to do," Pontiac Northern student Loren Johnson, 17, said.

Many school officials say the new rules are creating a positive change in students' behavior and Pontiac Northern Principal Joanne Battle has made a wise choice.

"The halls are quiet, and frankly, there's been such a change, it's not the same building it was before Easter, and Mrs. Battle has done a very good job in changing that climate," Pontiac Northern teacher Martin Ballard said.
