COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, May 16 (UPI) -- Nine people were killed and another 85 were wounded in a suicide bomb attack Friday in Sri Lanka, medical sources say.

Medical sources in Colombo said at least nine people, including seven police officers, were killed when a bus carrying police commandos was stuck by a bomb-laden three-wheeler, the Tamil Star reported.

The riot police were traveling to provide security for the swearing-in ceremony for the Eastern Province chief minister when the attack occurred, the Star said.

Meanwhile, one source told NIDAHASA news that the police personnel had been on their way to control a rally by the United National Party when the bus was attacked.

NIDAHASA reported that, according to the Sri Lanka Defense Ministry, at least eight people were killed and more than 90 people suffered injuries in the bombing.

The Ministry of Defense said Friday's bombing occurred on the eve of Vesak week, a Buddhist holiday on which followers gather at temples to honor their faith.
