JERSEY CITY, N.J., May 15 (UPI) -- New Jersey police said they found a 5-year-old boy after he wandered more than two miles from home on foot while his mother was asleep.

The Jersey City boy was found to be in good heath after authorities transported him to Jersey City Medical Center, the (Jersey City, N.J.) Jersey Journal reported Thursday.

"I fell asleep about 45 minutes ago and when I woke (the boy) was gone," the boy's 31-year-old mother told police.

The child told authorities his mother had asked him to go to the store and he was on the way to his cousin's house.

Officials said the child was still in the custody of his mother and the state Division of Youth and Family Services was made aware of the Tuesday incident.

Detectives said the boy's mother seemed "unconcerned about her child's welfare" when she retrieved him from the hospital.
