Teen dad jailed on attempted murder charge

TUCSON, May 15 (UPI) -- A 17-year-old Arizona father charged with 44 crimes since he was 10, is in jail on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting and stabbing police officers.

Travis Hylton was jailed on three counts of attempted murder after he allegedly assaulted two Tucson police officers, opening fire on one and stabbing the other during a domestic-violence incident Sunday, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

It is reported the officers were treated for serious wounds.

Thirty-eight of Hylton's 44 charges, most of which are assault-related, have been dropped because doctors said he is incompetent to go on trial and unfit to defend himself.

In 2001, a doctor determined Hylton was dealing with "organic brain impairment."

"I reached out for help but you have to rely on the system for assistance, and I could not get any for Travis," his mother Sharon Russell said.

Russell told reporters she sincerely hopes the police injured by her son are recovering successfully.
