Teen charged as adult with killing mother

TOWSON, Md., May 15 (UPI) -- A Baltimore-area teenager has been charged with beating his mother to death with a baseball bat after what police say was an argument about school work.

Lewis Carlton Powell III, 16, of Towson, was charged as an adult Wednesday with killing of his mother and attempting to kill his father, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Investigators said the argument began Tuesday when Powell returned home from school. Donna Campbell-Powell was hit many times with the bat, investigators said.

The teen allegedly hid his mother's body in the garage, covering it with a blanket. The next morning, he allegedly attacked his father with the bat.

Co-workers in the Baltimore County Office of Budget and Finance became concerned when she did not show up for work Wednesday and went to the house. They called police when no one responded.

Officers found the father and son in the back yard.

Powell was a scholarship student at the McDonogh School, a private school in Owings Mills, a neighbor said.
