ELIZABETH, N.J., May 14 (UPI) -- Disgraced former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey said Wednesday his bitter, high-profile divorce from his estranged wife is likely to proceed to trial.

McGreevey, who resigned the governor's office in 2004 after admitting to a gay extramarital affair with an aide, told The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger that a settlement in the dispute with Dina Matos McGreevey was unlikely as the case moved into the trial phase.

Asked by the newspaper if the case seemed destined to go to trial, McGreevey responded, "Unfortunately, probably yes."

Matos McGreevey is looking for monetary compensation from her husband, whom she married in 2000. The ex-governor however, has entered the seminary and claims he is penniless.

The procedure so far has been notable in the amount of salacious details revealed about the couple's marriage. Matos McGreevey, for instance, says she was duped by a gay man into a marriage of convenience, while McGreevey says his wife willingly participated in three-way sexual encounters with him and his former aide.
