TULSA, Okla., May 14 (UPI) -- Voters in Muskogee made Oklahoma history by electing a 19-year-old college freshman as their mayor.

John Tyler Hammons of the University of Oklahoma received nearly 70 percent of the vote Tuesday beating out three-time former Mayor Hershel McBride, 70, the Tulsa World reported.

"This is not about me anymore," Hammons told supporters. "It's about where Muskogee is going."

When the votes were tallied, Hammons had 3,703 compared to 1,616 for McBride.

A graduate of Muskogee High School, Hammons is majoring in political science and public administration at Oklahoma.

In high school he was student council president and head of Roughers Against Illegal Drugs.

The World said Hammons planned to transfer from the University of Oklahoma, which is in the south-central part of the state to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, about 25 miles from Muskogee.
