ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 13 (UPI) -- A New Orleans man has pleaded guilty in Alexandria, Va., to a charge of delivering defense information to China, U.S. officials said.
The U.S. Justice Department said the information dealt primarily with U.S. military sales to Taiwan and U.S. military communications security, classified at the "secret" level.
Tai Shen Kuo, 58, a naturalized U.S. citizen, faces up to life in prison.
The department says Kuo's criminal activity took place from March 2007 to February of this year. Court documents said Kuo developed a friendship with Gregg W. Bergersen -- a weapons systems policy analyst at the Arlington, Va.-based Defense Security Cooperation Agency -- plying him with gifts, trips and money.
Bergersen provided Kuo with the information, but did not know Kuo passed along the information to a Chinese official in exchange for $50,000, the government said.
Bergersen pleaded guilty in March and faces up to 10 years in prison when sentenced in July.
The Justice Department said espionage charges are still pending against an alleged conspirator, Yu Xin Kang of New Orleans, who remains held without bond.
