BUFFALO, N.Y., May 12 (UPI) -- An armed man gave himself up peacefully Monday night after an hours-long standoff with police on the New York State Thruway, a Buffalo TV station reported.

The incident left hundreds of vehicles backed up in both directions, WKBW-TV reported. Nearby boats also were cleared away from the vicinity by the U.S. Coast Guard.

WKBW said the incident, which began just after 6 p.m. near the Ontario Street exit along the southbound lanes of the Niagara section of the 190 highway, apparently began after a domestic situation led a woman to jump out of the man's pickup truck. The man then allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it a state police trooper, the TV station reported.

SWAT team officers eventually distracted the man's attention, allowing officers to approach the truck and take him into custody shortly before 9 p.m. He was expected to be taken to a hospital for an evaluation, WKBW said.
