LUSAKA, Zambia, May 10 (UPI) -- The Zambian government has seized nearly $60 million in funds and assets allegedly stolen under former President Frederick Chiluba, an official said.

Information Minister Mike Mulongoti said while Chiluba is on trial on corruption charges in the capital of Lusaka, the seized assets will be sold to provide funds for hospital upgrades, the BBC reported Saturday.

Among the assets were an apartment in Belgium and several bank deposits. Mulongoti said former government officials were in possession of some of the seized funds.

Britain's High Court ruled in 2007 that four of Chiluba's aides had worked with the president to steal nearly $40 million in funds from the government.

The former president, who held office from 1991 to 2001, has denied the allegations and appealed the High Court verdict.

The BBC said the investigation in Zambia is being led by Chiluba's successor, President Levy Mwanawasa.
