WASHINGTON, May 9 (UPI) -- U.S. officials say North Korea's delivery of documents from its nuclear weapons program clears the way for it to be removed from the list of terrorism sponsors.
North Korea handed over eight boxes of documents, dating back to1990, The Washington Times said Friday. More than 18,000 pages of records were given to Sung Kim, director of the U.S. State Department's Korea desk, in Pyongyang.
The records are intended to show how much plutonium North Korea has produced. U.S. officials have estimated that amount to be 65-110 pounds.
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Kim will be bringing "a significant number of documents related to North Korea's plutonium program, We'll have an opportunity over the coming days and weeks to assess the significance of these documents."
