Texas sinkhole grows

DAISETTA, Texas, May 8 (UPI) -- A giant sinkhole in Southeast Texas has swallowed telephone poles, storage tanks and the cab on an 18-wheeler, and it's still growing, officials said.

The sinkhole opened Wednesday in Daisetta, Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday.

As of Thursday morning, sheriff's Cpl. Hugh Bishop estimated the sinkhole's size at 600 yards wide and 200 feet deep.

"There are signs it's slowing down, but it's a nature thing. We don't know what to expect," he was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

The Texas Railroad Commission and a geologist were on site to determine the cause of the sinkhole.

One possible cause is that one of the many salt domes in the region collapsed, causing the surface to cave.
