Gunman dies in courthouse shooting

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 8 (UPI) -- The Air Force veteran who started shooting in a St. Petersburg, Fla., courthouse was armed with a gun, a knife, a gas mask and 70 bullets, police say.

But, no one knew why Glen Powell, 30, went on his shooting spree, firing twice at two deputies who shot back 11 times, killing him. One of the deputies was grazed by a bullet, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

Powell was reported in the courthouse to file a response to divorce papers recently filed by his wife, Vivian. She had cited "irreconcilable differences."

Powell's mother, Virginia Powell, 66, told the newspaper her son, a former Eagle Scout, had been reading anti-government Web sites.

"I just think he believed a bunch of lies," she said. "I can't imagine that he would have actually tried to kill anybody. I think he was trying to make some kind of statement."
