BEIJING, May 7 (UPI) -- A 28th child has died from a hand-foot-mouth disease outbreak in China, where the illness has been diagnosed in thousands of children.
Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu said two deaths were reported in the central Hunan province and southwest Guangxi Zhuang region, raising the death toll to 28 since the disease's outbreak in March, Xinhua reported. The children were 2 and 3 years old.
The deaths in Hunan and Guangxi from HFMD were the first, indicating the contagion may be spreading.
The total number of reported cases in China jumped to 15,799 by Tuesday from Monday's 11,905, Xinhua said. The worst-affected area is China's eastern Anhui province, where 22 children have died in Fuyang City.
The disease is caused by a virus that causes small, blister-like bumps in the mouth, hands and feet. The blisters may also appear in the diaper area and on the legs and arms.
