WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- People could have died or been injured if a bomb found in a truck on Capitol Hill in Washington had been detonated, an FBI expert testified.
Agent Daniel Hickey told the D.C. Superior Court a homemade bomb found in defendant Michael Gorbey's truck after his arrest "clearly (was) designed to be an anti-personnel weapon," The Hill reported Tuesday.
Under cross-examination, however, Hickey said it wasn't clear whether the device had a fusing system that would allow it to explode.
The U.S. Capitol Police bomb squad and FBI agents allegedly found the device three weeks after Gorbey's arrest for approaching the U.S. Supreme Court building with a loaded shotgun. Gorbey faces 14 charges, including manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction, and is representing himself in D.C. Superior Court.
Law enforcement personnel found the truck parked two blocks north of the Russell Senate Office Building, the Washington publication said. The bomb was a glass bottle holding 250 BBs taped to a metal canister filled with black gun powder.
The prosecution was expected to finish presenting its case Tuesday, after which Gorbey will begin to call his witnesses.
