WASHINGTON, May 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Interior Department and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation formed a panel to examine the program for the preservation of historical sites.

The panelists come from government, academia and private industry and are to have their first meeting Thursday in Washington, said a joint statement from the Interior Department and the advisory council.

This expert panel will examine how "we can…meet historic preservation needs of the 21st century," said Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett, co-chairwoman of the panel.
