LA PAZ, Bolivia, May 5 (UPI) -- Bolivian President Evo Morales has denounced the vote for greater autonomy for Santa Cruz province in the nation's eastern region, officials said.
Morales said the vote on whether gas-rich Santa Cruz should have more powers to self govern was illegal and would not be recognized by his government in La Paz, the capital, La Razon newspaper reported Monday online.
The leftist Bolivian leader also called on governors from other provinces in eastern Bolivia to sit down to talks before carrying out their own autonomy votes.
Several eastern provinces -- home to the South American nation's lucrative gas deposits -- have expressed displeasure with Morales and his nationalization efforts, saying the country's wealthy are unfairly taxed to pay for his social programs.
More than 80 percent of Santa Cruz residents voted for more autonomy for the province.
