U.S. Air Force suspends T-38 training

SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas, May 2 (UPI) -- Training flights on the T-38C Talon aircraft have been suspended following a fatal crash at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, U.S. Air Force officials said.

The crash Thursday was the second in two weeks involving the aircraft, Sheppard AFB officials said in a news release. On April 23, two pilots were killed when their T-38 crashed at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.

"We have no evidence that these incidents are related," said Air Force Gen. William R Looney III, who ordered the suspension Thursday. "But until we have a more complete understanding of the causes of both accidents, it's prudent to stand down the T-38's," he said

The causes of both crashes are being investigated

The Air Force has about 500 T-38 aircraft, used to prep pilots for training in fighter and bomber aircraft, officials said.
