American bans skycap tips in Boston

BOSTON, May 2 (UPI) -- American Airlines has banned skycaps from accepting tips at Logan International Airport in Boston, a move skycaps say is retaliation for a successful lawsuit.

Signs were posted Thursday warning passengers not to tip the employees who check in bags at the curb, the Boston Globe reported. The rule applies only at Logan.

Almost four weeks ago, a jury in federal court in Boston ruled that American Airlines had cheated nine skycaps by imposing a $2-a-bag charge for curbside check-in. The company was ordered to pay them $325,000.

"They turned a tipping job into a no-tipping job within one day, within one hour," one skycap, who did not want his name used, told the Globe.

American said its subcontractor is raising the hourly wage paid skycaps from $12 to $15 per hour to make up for the lost tips. But skycaps say they will still lose income.

Airlines desperate for more revenue have begun charging for curbside check-in in recent years. The lawsuit claimed that the money should go to the skycaps.

American has asked the trial judge to set the award aside.
