WINDERMERE, Fla., May 1 (UPI) -- Police are escorting students going to a Florida elementary school because of alligators lingering around the property, officials said.

Residents near Windermere Elementary school saw the alligators Wednesday in close proximity to a walkway frequented by school children, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported.

"Of course, everyone is concerned about the children's safety. When you have an 11-foot alligator out here and you got small ones running around, it could be a very dangerous situation," Windermere police Cpl. Arthur Mueller said.

Authorities Wednesday destroyed one gator, the report said.

"When (trappers) got near it, it started hissing and showing aggressive behavior," Mueller said.

Officials reportedly believe there is at least one other gator lingering around the area.

Police will continue walking with children near the school until the second animal is captured, WKMG reported.
